Nomic:Game 2005-04-02:Voting and scoring
From Carls wiki
All rise.
Hello, I will be your judge for the evening, by my reading of r212. Begging your attention for a few minutes, I will explain why I have invoked judgement, and consequently what it is that I am here to judge.
It seems that everyone of us has been unknowingly breaking r105. Firstly, as far as I know, nobody who has proposed a rule change has explicitly voted on it. Secondly, some of the scoring calculations are wrong. I am going to attempt a fair ruling on these two issues.
Voting
Here we have what I consider an honest mistake on the part of everybody. Nobody even considered the possibility of voting no to one's own proposal, right? (The only reasons for doing that would be
- if, during the discussions, the proposer was the only one who realised that the proposal was a bad one, or
- to gain some extra points by r204,
and frankly, the first scenario seems unlikely and the second one murky.) Therefore I rule that as a proposer one is bound to support one's proposal by a yes vote, and for all practical purposes it is, was and will be as if the proposer had voted yes at the start of the voting process.
Scoring
Incidentally, it seems that I am the only one who has been keeping score so far, so this ruling will be even easier since it involves only me, and I know exactly how I've been thinking in the matter.
I have redone the calculations and concluded that according to the correct reading of r105,
should be
and thus Jonathan should have a total of -3 points instead of his current -4. Seeing as we have no official scorekeeper and my efforts were more on a voluntary basis, I am unwilling to give too harsh a punishment for negligence in duty or some such. Instead I will rule that I
- shall subtract 3 points from my own score for carrying out the scorekeeping job badly,
- shall correct Jonathan's figure, and finally
- shall not be allowed to do scorekeeping for another three rounds.
Court dismissed.
