  • gou3, "dog". On the left is 犬 quan3, the dog radical. It looks a bit different as a standalone character, but it's the same semantic element.
  • hai2, "child". On the left is 子 zi5, a radical originally meaning "child".
  • hang2, "boat". On the left is 舟 zhou1, the boat radical, originally depicting a dugout canoe.
  • shu4, "tree". On the extreme left can be seen a squashed 木 mu4, meaning "tree" or "wooden".
