Bucky

  • a game from New Zealand
  • chess board
  • chess pieces
  • same goal as chess
  • ...but different rules

Pieces

Wagon movement

  • Wagon moves in straight lines
  • ...but always all the way
  • Can smash enemy pieces
  • ...but only if they are straight ahead

Madam movement

  • Madam moves in straight lines
  • ...any distance
  • Takes by moving into enemies

Shaman hypnosis

  • Shaman always hypnotizes
  • ...but only enemy pieces
  • ...in diagonal line of sight

It is permitted to walk into hypnosis...

  • A piece may walk into hypnosis
    • ...for example to unhypnotize a friendly piece
  • A hypnotized dude is not necessarily in buck

...but not into double hypnosis

  • That would be suicide
  • However, it is permitted to kill one's own pieces
    • ...as long as they are not the piece which moves

Madam revenge

  • A hypnotized madam may not make a move...
  • ...unless
    • she captures an enemy piece
    • the square in which she was standing becomes unhypnotized
  • Thus, the madam may take the piece that hypnotizes her

Madam/dude teleport

  • Madam and dude can exchange places...
  • ...once per player during the game
  • One of the pieces must be unhypnotized

Dude movement

  • Dude moves to adjacent squares
  • May not move to a threatened square

Goal of the game

  • You win if
    • opponent is in buck
    • opponent cannot get out of it

Bucking

  • A player is bucked if an enemy piece threatens to take it in the next move
  • The dude is never taken, there are only threats

Bucking and double hypnosis

  • Since pieces are taken by double hypnosis...
  • ...a piece threatening to hypnotize an already hypnotized dude...
  • ...is also putting the dude in buck.

Shamans trapped in hypnosis

If you hypnotize a threatening piece, then you must move the dude before you can move the shaman. The shaman is then trapped into hypnotizing the attacking piece. This sometimes occurs when the dude is under hypnosis and cannot move away.
