A word to all Swedish drivers

When I stand waiting at a crossing, you always stop. It makes me feel a bit stressed. Please don't stop.

Now, I know there are several levels of this issue. Firstly, I'm standing at a crossing, seemingly ready to cross. You probably think you're being nice by stopping and letting me cross early. It's just that, I can't get rid of the feeling that if you were to hit the accelerator instead, you would be home sooner.

I'm the slow vehicle here. I'm out for a walk. If I were in a hurry, I probably wouldn't have chosen my feet as transportation. By stopping, you give me something that I have plenty of when I'm out walking: time.

Secondly, I know that, at a crossing in Sweden, if I were to walk across the road and you were to hit me, it would be your fault. I can understand that you would like to avoid that situation. But as it is, you're not letting me into the decision loop at all. When you stop, I basically have to accept your misdirected kindness, and cross the road. Meanwhile, you're blocking the flow of traffic for cars behind you.

Sorry about this. I know you're just being polite Swedish drivers. But there's so much else in life that you could use that niceness on, that would make the world a better place. Smile at people in your workplace. Give to charity. Be a caring parent.

But don't just stand there with the engine on.

Go, go, go!
